The light at the end of the tunnel

People get into science for many reasons, but an underlying passion is a central component. The scientific life is varied and full of highs and lows, heady discoveries and doleful disillusionment.

The light at the end of the tunnel

Postby Editor on Mon Jul 18, 2011 7:53 pm

So, all going well, I should resubmit my revised manuscript and get my life back. I did everything the referees asked, so fingers crossed it gets accepted soon!

I've been delaying thinking about The Next Step for a long time now because I had to focus on this paper. Now that it's (nearly) gone, I'll need to dive head first into trying to get independent funding. Exciting, but also a little scary.

I saw on your blog that your paper has been accepted, congratulations! I hope it's going well with thinking about the next step.

I'm a little in shock because one of my postdoc lab mates has just decided she can't take the stress and uncertainty any more and has decided to leave research. She's decided to go into teacher training. While I think she'd be a brilliant teacher I am a bit demoralised because she's a really brilliant scientist, has a decent publication record, and I would have thought she'd be a shoein to become a successful group leader. But she doesn't want to take the risk that it doesn't pan out. She feels its safer to ensure she has a stable job.

Yikes. Teaching scares the willies out of me. I mean, I'm sure I'd be good at it, but...

Teaching would be pretty horrendous the first year in a full-time classroom I think - just imagine all the prep!
