Sexing up the lab coat

Intriguing juxtaposition or pretentious clap-trap? Natural allies or alien nations? Whatever your views, science and art are being linked together more and more often by the intelligentia (and funding bodies).

Scientists' Style Guide

Here is the one that comes with plastic test tube, and this requires 'one' to bend for optimum effect, but if you are wearing this underneath, it doesn't have the desired effect; you may just end up atracting this'one' or whorse

Apparently the white coat is on its way out in the British medical profession!

Oh yes, they talked about that here, too! Reaction to the "white coat effect" on blood pressure. But maybe $200K in med school loans had better buy you some authority, I don't know -- they never got rid of them. Actually I bet the patients would complain more about it.

Especially the old ones.

Like me. I find myself feeling deeply, almost barkingly intolerant when I see a mailman, mail person, mail carrier in mufti. Emblem of civilization and functioning government, mailman.

which is nonsense of course - the hypertensive effect isn't due to the white coat but to the whole thing; the surgery, the thought of actually seeing a doctor, etc.

Heh.

I found this bit interesting:

"But borrowed from the scientists who were making breakthroughs in laboratories, the white coat was also seen as a way of giving credibility to a profession regarded by some as dominated by cultish quacks."

You can't get TC style coats outside the UK?

We'd have to ship them over: no locally-grown produce.

Which is crazy—Australia exports cotton (mainly to China, where it gets sweat-shopped into cheap swimwear and sold back).

But yeah, 60 quid, plus about the same again for shipping. That's a shedload of Australian $.

So, in my search for a side-fastening lab coat with elasticated cuffs (hopeless, I'm beginning to realise, unless I persuade my boss to buy me one from Fisher's UK site), I came across this, which some of you might like:

FF, you might want to drop Mrs Eccles a line. She'd be happy to run one up for you (although it would probably have to wait until we're back in the UK).

That would be just about the coolest thing ever! Is this an Eccles cottage industry? I'll remember to bother you about it when you're settled in the Northern Hemisphere. Did she make the combat print one in your blog?

Um, yes she did.

Sorry, I thought that was obvious! Obviously she needs better marketing...

It wasn't clear if you were being sarcastic or not in the blog  So she does need to hire a better marketing director, aye.

But yes, I will take you up on the idea when it's convenient for you guys. As long as she takes Paypal or some such. Transferring money from here to the UK via the bank is foolishly expensive.
