Sexing up the lab coat

Intriguing juxtaposition or pretentious clap-trap? Natural allies or alien nations? Whatever your views, science and art are being linked together more and more often by the intelligentia (and funding bodies).

I would welcome a different sort of coat colour...I look wretched in white. I'm thinking earthtones...

Oh yes. There is noone, IMHO, who looks good in these big, fluffy labcoats that are either to small 'up there' or too long sleaves etc... Sometimes I think it looks like a big over coat which might be worn be a flasher ;)

And the colour? I'd love one in stylish grey or moss green (or really many other colours) as long as nothing resembeling pastell or orange comes along! Imagine that?! I guess I could agree with orange when working in the Hot lab.... with I125... but only then...

Yes, definitely fluorescent colours for rad work, hot pinks and oranges. What a great idea!

I think a new coat would still have to convey Gravitas. Otherwise we'll look daft on News at Ten or Horizon!

Thing is, the Howie report-style coats are incredibly good at what they do:

I managed to hold on to one when I left the UK, and it often draws favourable comments. People seem to especially like the neck-fastening thing, in a science-punk fetishist way.

Some designs or colours would make it even swisher.

Edit: Hah.

And Fisher do coloured Howie-style, but they're polycotton instead of 100% cotton and shorter.

Only techs pipette on the evening news. Lab heads talk in front of bookshelves!

Dan, do you wear those shoes with your Howie coat? It's a nice look for you.

Hurry, act now! Invitrogen are giving away free red lab coats with every order over...X pounds, I forget the threshold amount. Will dig up the advert and post it tomorrow.

Red...I mean...cool or what?

Wotcha Mike, we're logged on at the same time!

I saw that advert today too. Unfortunately the basic design looks as boring as ever, but I like the idea of red. Seeing as how I'm in charge of the lab ordering...;-)

I got interviewed today by UCL who want to do a web feature on my work to change the image of scientists in society - so that Guardian article is paying off.

I think red would be rather alarming - and terrible on my skin tone!

But definitely different. I still think that black is the way forward, though.

What is it about the Howie you like, Dan? I've never worn one and I can't see much difference from the photo.

Side fastening (studs, not buttons), high neck which can be worn down for that professional yet casual look, elasticated cuffs and cotton. . . pure cotton.

Plus the elasticated seams won't split when he gets angry, his skin turns green and he bulks up to five times his normal size.
